The Projects & Services

IN-SCHOOLS PROGRAM (ISP)
STAHRS is an evolving organization open to reaching youth sports participants through various mechanisms and settings. The overall objective is to present in high schools and middle schools around Colorado and the US. Rural areas will be targeted to address the gaps in mental health services using the In-Schools Program.

Mary DeBolt's PE students of Mountain Vista HS offered excellent support & feedback on the Anti-Bullying Curriculum in April 2019. Mrs. Davis' psychology class at Parker Lutheran received the information with thoughtfulness and understanding this past November 2019.

LOCAL LESSONS PROGRAM
We continue to teach racquetball PE classes to 800 students per year to the high school students of Highlands Ranch, CO to grow the sport of racquetball. We hope to find another champion or two while we promote positive peer cultures of inclusion, bullying prevention, and educate about relationship violence.

SCHOOL SHOOTING VICTIMS SUPPORT GROUP
This is an idea to explore based on my work with an individual who recently graduated of STEM School in Highlands Ranch. The young man continued to struggle with loud noises at work. He was willing to try racquetball as an effective mechanism to help desensitize and reprogram his mental, emotional, and physiological responses to loud noises.
IT WORKED GREAT!!!
I would like to expand on this clinical work with a larger group of students and veterans with symptoms of PTSD.

EXPLORING EMPOWERMENT
This is another developmental program to use racquetball to help children and adults with intellectual disabilities. Using the Whisper Ball developed by Dan Davis, adults and children with physical limitations and auditory stimulus issues can use racquetball as an effective recreation therapy.

INDIVIDUALS, COUPLES, & FAMILIES
STAHRS is able to offer personal counseling to athletes regarding personal & family relationships, balancing relationships with training & competition, and performance enhancement.

EMPLOYERS & BUSINESSES
Our Anti-Bullying curriculum would be an excellent half-day team training opportunity to building team cohesion and performance. The Relationships 101 workshop is best suited to full-day, multi-day trainings or even an extended team retreat. It should positively impact all participants.
Corporate sponsors are entitled to receive half-day or full-day trainings depending on the level of sponsorship.

FEATURED PROJECTS

in-schools program (ISP)

Mountain Vista High School- Thank you to Mary DeBolt, Principal Mike Weaver, AD Jim Flanigan, and the students of Mrs. DeBolt's PE classes for listening to the information and discussing the anti-bullying curriculum. Your feedback will make the future presentations better and your peers will appreciate it.

Pueblo - STAHRS received a small grant from the David & Lucille Packard Foundation of Pueblo to begin the process to implement our programs and augment anti-bullying programs currently in the public schools.

STAHRS hopes to work with student athletes from middle schools and high schools to teach them about healthy relationship dynamics and to recognize the warning signs of teen dating violence. Our young men need to learn how & why to respect women instead of the typical sexual objectification. Our young women need to learn that they deserve to be treated with respect and to NEVER SETTLE for less. They need to learn how to build self-esteem & self-respect.

Schools can choose to have a small group of students, such as team captains, work with the materials. The Relationships 101 workshop can be presented to groups of up to 100+. According to Joe Garcia, Colorado 1A Athletic Director of the Year and former South Conejos School District AD, "one hundred students would cover our entire middle school and high school population-boys and girls both." Grant funding will be sought to resource the scale of the in-school program.

Local lessons program
Highlands Ranch, Co

With support from the Highlands Ranch Community Association, Douglas County Schools and the Colorado Racquetball Association, STAHRS volunteers will continue to provide racquetball lessons to Rock Canyon, Mountain Vista, Thunder Ridge and Highlands Ranch High Schools at the North Ridge Recreation Center. The lessons are part of the schools' efforts to expose their students to a variety of sports, and to highlight the availability of the facilities in their home town.

The North Ridge Rec Center has been a hotbed of local racquetball and hosted numerous National events, such a US Junior Nationals, Intercollegiate Nationals, US National Doubles, US National Seniors and will host the US National Singles championship in May 2019. The anti-bullying curriculum will be implemented with the aid of the educators and discussed in classrooms. The discussions will address basics of human behaviors and explain such violence as the epidemic of school shootings, ten dating violence, and sexual assaults.

STAHRS recently developed the Exploring Empowerment Program (EEP), which will focus on adaptive physical activities for students and adults with intellectual challenges, such Down Syndrome, Autistic Spectrum Disorders, Cerebral Palsy, etc. The program will also aid Disabled Veterans to build their physical capabilities and overcome mental and emotional challenges associated with PTSD from combat. The Local Lessons Program has been routinely teaching students with challenges every semester as part of their PE classes. The EEP utilizes Whipserball TM, developed by the program director, Dan Davis. The adaptive ball slows the speed of the game to allow more time for mental processing, reactivity, and physical limitations. For Vets, the ball also prevents emotional triggers associated with the crack of the ball and combat related traumas. Overtime, they become desensitized to the stimuli and transfer to using the regular ball after deprogamming their conditioned responses.

LLP & EEP Director

Dan has been playing and teaching forever...Just ask him! His favorite stories include Colorado Junior great Erika Manilla. He is a Board of Directors member for the Colorado Racquetball Association, developed the WhisperballTM, and husband of STAHRS Board President, Kay Davis. What a great team STAHRS acquired with Kay & Dan. Thank You so much.

Earl Mosley

Instructor Extraordinare

In his late 60's, Earl 'The Pearl' Mosely can thrill high school students with his quickness and his amazing shot selection and consistency. Ask Earl the secret of his success and ability to all kinds of shots and he'll tell you, "I had to develop a new shot every time I hurt my shoulder and couldn't hit the old shots." With 50 years plus of experience, you can only imagine his arsenal.

steve cox

'Entertainment Coordinator'

Steve has a great heart & soul. He's a dedicated player with the quickness of the energizer bunny. Never assume you'll get a second bounce with him. He loves teaching the kids. While he cannot teach them the power game, he certainly teaches them style and finesse as you'll note by the pose.
